The spectacular thing that revolutionized the world and not just world of IT was the graphical display unit of the computer.

Everybody was excited and the reason I got interested to computers was that I started playing Atari games.  The game was really exciting and cool. Though place was not in USA bit in Middle East.

Apple story was interesting.

Games like:

  • Infiltrate
  • Asteroids
  • Combat
  • Return of the Jedi
  • Pac Man
  •

This created excitement and played four hours. Atari was not the 1st game I played actually it was Nintendo’s Game and Watch. I think got at as a gift from who, cannot remember in early 1980s. But it was really fun. This is the same interest Steve Jobs might have felt when he with his friend Steve Wozniak was developing the Apple.

Steve Jobs says:

You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.” –Steve Jobs

About 20 years ago I heard something like Bill Gates got the idea of Graphics interface for windows from Apple.

This what happened:

Steve Jobs in early 1980’s flies to Washington trying to get Bill Gates make Microsoft software for the Apple. His attitude did not impress Bill Gates.

“It was kind of a weird seduction visit where Steve was saying we don’t really need you and we’re doing this great thing, and it’s under the cover. He’s in his Steve Jobs sales mode, but kind of the sales mode that also says, ‘I don’t need you, but I might let you be involved.”-Bill Gates

One thing you can say looking at the young gentlemen’s pictures of the two Founders are as follows:

  • Steve Jobs- He looks handsome, stylish and proud.
  • Bill Gates looking a studious businessman thinking of a strategy or something.

Bill Gates was a Macintosh developer so being invited by Steve Jobs to develop productivity Software in Macintosh.  This was really interesting and attractive offer from Apple.  Marketing is an important factor in the race between Apple and Microsoft. Bill Gates did study in Harvard though he did not graduate from there. But absorbed enough to make lots of money with it.

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were motivated by 1975 edition of Popular Mechanics.  This is an idea for inspiring young kids in IT. At this developing age if these resources like Kits and magazines are not there is hamper in development. I did not have this opportunity of having access to IT magazines.

Bill Gates and Paul Allen  realized that the price of Altair would drop to such an extent that providing a software would be profitable business. This was somewhere in 1975. The Language was made available by GitHub.

Bill Gates develops Basic Language.

The language was written by Bill Gates and Paul Allen for the Altair. The 1st language I used in ZX Spectrum and PC was GW-Basic. Little did I know it was invented by Bill Gates who was the owner of Microsoft. Or simply the guys who owned MS Flight Simulator. This had a great impact on future of Desktop Computing.

The Love and Hate Story Begins

Bill Gates and Steve appears in a video  called “Dating Game ” for Apple Employees in 1983. Bill Gates compliments the Mac by saying :

“To create a new standard, it takes something that’s not just a little bit different, it takes something that’s really new and really captures people’s imagination and the Macintosh, of all the machines I’ve ever seen, is the only one that meets that standard”

Recruitment by Steve Jobs of Microsft

After Microsoft was recruited to be the “first third party software applications developer”. Steve Jobs was afraid that Microsoft might ‘copy ideas’ from Apple. Steve made Microsoft promise not to ship any software that used a mouse .

The thing they missed out was the date Apple had in the contract with Microsoft covered their launch date. But Apple started late in launching their OS and did not modify the date in the contract, according to Andy Hertzfeld.   Andy happened to be one of the members of original Apple development team. He was a graduate of Brown University and later on also did attend further studies from UCLA ,Berkeley. Andy bought an Apple and then went to develop software for it. He then wrote for

This caught attention of Apple.

Bill Gates  hired a  known programmer named Neil Konzen to work on the MAC project.

Though Bill Gates said nice words about the MAC but thing was he was selling OS ,The DOS to IBM. That is MS-DOS. Studying stories of Bill Gates and Silicon Valley may lead to inspiration and techniques to many current young tech entrepreneur.

Apple and Microsoft

Microsoft Announces Windows 1.0 and Steve Jobs finds out!

In middle of 1983 whilst Microsoft showed porotypes of their spread sheet and business graphics program:

  • Multiplan
  • Chart

Steve Jobs was informed that Microsoft might ‘clone the MAC’ but he did not think Microsoft could not do it.                                                                            In November 83 ,Microsoft made ‘surprising  announcement’ at COMDEX., which was an exhibition of computers being held in Las Vegas, Nevada ,each year.

Windows ,a news Operating System which was mouse enabled was announced.

This when Steve Jobs became  ‘ballistic’ (as put by Andy.)He said:

Get Gates down here immediately

Steve Jobs went to add :

“He needs to explain this, and it better be good. I want him in this room by tomorrow afternoon, or else!”

Steve Shouts at Bill Gates and asked reason for violation of the contract.

“You’re ripping us off!”

So Bill Gates replies:

“Well, Steve, I think there’s more than one way of looking at it. I think it’s more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it”

Microsoft it happens did not violate any contract with Apple. The contract stated that Microsoft could not ship any mouse based software until year after Mac introduction.

Microsoft introduces Windows after two years mentioned in the contract.

Bill Gates Sends a Memo to Apple-June,1985

Bill Gates sent a memo to Apple in June,1985.

Apple must make Macintosh a standard. But no personal computer company, not even IBM, can create a standard without independent support. Even though Apple realized this, they have not been able to gain the independent support required to be perceived as a standard.

Steve Jobs gets removed from Apple in Spring of 1985. Several months earlier. The Man behind the company :Apple.  The company that created entertainment and imagination for some of the people of the world.  Steve was a creative person but at same time leading a business was not possible.

Bottom line:

Steve Jobs was not in Apple when Bill Gates send his famous memo .

Some timing, well Microsoft was always good in business.

Bill Gates said to license Apple’s Operating System which they did not.  Steve Wozniak says it :

“The computer was never the problem. The company’s strategy was. Apple saw itself as a hardware company; in order to protect our hardware profits, we didn’t license our operating system. We had the most beautiful operating system, but to get it you had to buy our hardware at twice the price. That was a mistake. What we should have done was calculate an appropriate price to license the operating system. We were also naïve to think that the best technology would prevail. It often doesn’t.”

I remember in the 1980s (1987):

The Macintosh is great but :

  • It is expensive
  • You need a Apple computer to run the Macintosh. My first Operating System usage was DOS and then Windows. Both owned by Microsoft.

So what has changed in 2021?

At that time John Scully  was CEO of Apple.  Previously he was CEO of Pepsi (Pepsi Cola.). John was thinking positively about the idea but Jean-Louise Gassie, the then Apple executive turned down the proposal or ‘shot  down the proposal’. He reasoned that

  • Apple was much superior to Microsoft
  • Apple will not face serious competition
  • will rely on hardware sales.

I mean personally speaking ,it did not look fair to me. Apple was like :”Bake and eat the cake too!”.  They forgot the saying:

you can’t have your cake and eat it too

Bill Gates introduces Windws 1.0!!

Apple  had internal conflict. John Scully wanted to go ahead with Bill Gates’ Proposal and Gasse was adamant’ in opposition to the plan.

Ultimately John Scully dropped the idea.  Apple sails were collapsing’ and Bingo!

Enter:

Bill Gates introduces Windows 1.0 at Comdex!

This move  decided the winner of OS wars. Winner ultimately was Bill Gates.

Windows-1.0
Windows 2.0

John Scully threatens Microsoft.

After launch of Windows 1.0,Gasse thought it was no threat. But Sculley was angry since Microsoft was provided early porotypes of the Macintosh and source code to optimize Word and Multi Plan.

He sent lawyer Jack Brown to Microsoft Headquarters to threaten Microsoft of a lawsuit for violation of copyright.

Bill Gates was real angry too!

Peace Deal

The meeting with Microsoft and apple produced result:

“Sculley agreed to license the Macintosh’s “visual displays” to Microsoft to use in software derived from Windows 1.0, and Microsoft agreed to continue developing its Mac products and promised not to release Excel (a feature-rich replacement for MultiPlan) for any other platform for two years.”

Apple SUES Microsoft

The Lawsuit of Apple against Microsoft -March,1988.

In November 1987,Windows 2.0 looks was improved a lot in comparison to Windows 1.0 . This new version had :

  • Over lapping windows
  • Multi tasking
  • limited Object Oriented environment.
  • Programs

This was shocking for Sculley since it bore resemblance to Macintosh very much.

A must watch movie for IT fans

“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose.”

In Court

The Judge  went in favor of Microsoft.

He said that the 179  of the 189 violations by Microsoft were covered in the agreement. The rest 10 were not violations since ideas could not be copy righted due to the merger doctrine. The merger doctrine says ideas cannot be copy righted.

Microsoft is the Good Guy!

Wow as Bill Gates had said: "He felt like he was the good guy and we were the bad guys. You know, very understandable. I respect Steve, we got to work together. We spurred each other on, even as competitors. None of that bothers me at all."

I believed that too for twenty years and the fact also liked Java. Eventually had to settle for PHP

The benevolent nature of Microsoft

Apple was in verge of bankruptcy in 1997. Then again

Bill Gates steps in:(No it is not what you think. Think Positive.)                                                            Microsoft agreed to invest 150 Million Us Dollars in Apple. To which Steve Jobs Said :

Bill, thank you. The world’s a better place
