KAUST or King Abdullah University of Science and Technology was founded in 2009.King Abdullah thought it would beacon of Knowledge.
In words of the Late King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz,
….Wishing to rekindle and spread the great and noble virtue of learning that has marked the Arab and Muslim worlds in earlier times, I am establishing King Abdullah University of Science and Technology on the Red Sea in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
As a new “House of Wisdom,” the University shall be a beacon for peace, hope, and reconciliation and shall serve the people of the Kingdom and benefit all the peoples of the world in keeping with the teachings of the Holy Quran, which explains that God created mankind in order for us to come to know each other.
Location :Thuwal ,Saudi Arabia
Nearest City :Jeddah. It is about an hours journey to King Abdullah University of Science and Technology by taxi and it costs $150 unless you have a friend in Jeddah to drop you. KAUST is the acronym for King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.
Jeddah is a great city and beautiful one too. It is a port city and not only its climate but people here are very tourist friendly. Jeddah has temperature of 36 Degrees Celsius to about 40 Degrees.
History of Jeddah
Known as the Bride of the Red Sea or Gateway to Makkah. It was founded in in the 7th Century as a major port. There are many attractions in Jeddah but will cover in upcoming post. The city has a history of about 2500 Years. During the time of Caliph Uthman bin Affan, this city was converted into a port.(647 CE).
- Distance from Jeddah to Makkah-86 KM.(about less than 1 hour)
- Distance from Jeddah to Madinah -415.0 KM.
- Distance from Jedddah to Thuwal -95.1 KM.
Thuwal ,which is location of the university was a fishing village which later become more know because of the University. I guess it offers less distractions for students studying there. It reminds me of IIT Kanpur which was half hour from Naveen Market.
KAUST and Nearby
KAUST is located in Thuwal,an hour from historic city of Jeddah. The name “Jeddah” means Grandmother in Arabic. It is said the grave of Hawa”(Eve, wife of first man Adam) is in Jeddah. This the reason for the name.
